Sleep Apnea Machines
The goal of any treatment for sleep apnea is to open an obstructed airway thereby allowing normal and easy breathing during the night so the patient can get good quality sleep. With that in mind, a look at a couple of sleep apnea machines will show how this is accomplished.
Mouthpieces Hold the Jaw in an Optimal Position
A dentist or orthodontist can be enlisted to design and construct an appliance to hold the lower jaw and tongue in a position that will allow the free passage of air. This appliance may be made of plastic and be adjustable, so if during the course of it's use you feel any pain or discomfort, speak to the doctor so that adjustments can be made so as not to create new problems.
Breathing Machines
Moderate to severe cases of sleep apnea may be treated with sleep apnea machines known as continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP. A CPAP machine blows a continuous gentle stream of air into the throat via a mouth and nose or just a nose mask. The air pressure keeps the throat open for normal breathing. There is just enough air pressure applied to keep the airway open, but not enough to dry out the throat or cause more damage.
There are various types of CPAP machines available, be sure to get one that works best for you. For instance, you may need the air moisturized a bit to keep from drying out the throat.
The sleep apnea machines currently in use generally will help all but the most severe case of sleep apnea. If you find that there is not one that'll help you, surgery may be the next option.
